Plant traits are differentially linked to performance in a semiarid ecosystem

چکیده

A central principle in trait-based ecology is that trait variation has an adaptive value. However, uncertainty over which plant traits influence individual performance across environmental gradients may limit our ability to use infer ecological processes at larger scales. To better understand are linked under different precipitation regimes, we measured above- and belowground traits, growth, reproductive allocation for four annual perennial species from a coastal sage scrub community California conditions of 50%, 100%, 150% ambient precipitation. Across water treatments, displayed morphological values consistent with high rates resource acquisition (e.g., low leaf mass per area, root tissue density, specific length), aboveground measures (including photosynthetic rate N concentration) were positively associated (reproductive allocation). Results structural equation model demonstrated explained 38% the gradient species, while accounted only 6%. Although roots play critical role uptake, more work needed mechanisms by can water-limited environments. Perennial showed lower plasticity than annuals variable as group terms trait–performance relationships, indicating rely on functional strategies respond drought. Our finding identity drives much relationships simplify efforts processes, such productivity, potentially influenced environmentally induced shifts values.

Are animal personality traits linked to life-history productivity?

Animal personality traits such as boldness, activity and aggressiveness have been described for many animal species. However, why some individuals are consistently bolder or more active than others, for example, is currently obscure. Given that life-history tradeoffs are common and known to promote inter-individual differences in behavior, we suggest that consistent individual differences in an...

Assessment of natural mycorrhizal potential in a desertified semiarid ecosystem.

A survey of the natural mycorrhizal potential has been carried out in a representative area of a desertified semiarid ecosystem in the southeast of Spain. Many indigenous plants from the field site were mycorrhizal, including the dominant Anthyllis cytisoides, which had high levels of colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Low numbers of AMF spores were present in the soil, althoug...

Influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in sugarcane productivity under semiarid tropical agro ecosystem in India

Impact of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in sugarcane productivity was assessed through a field experiment from plant and ratoon sugarcane in Tamil Nadu, India. Control, 12.5 and 18.75 kg ha-1 of AMF along with 75% and 100% of phosphorous application were triedas treatments. 18.75 kg ha-1 AMF applied plots showed significant difference in germination percentage, tiller number, internode...

Response of the soil microbial community to changes in precipitation in a semiarid ecosystem.

Microbial communities regulate many belowground carbon cycling processes; thus, the impact of climate change on the structure and function of soil microbial communities could, in turn, impact the release or storage of carbon in soils. Here we used a large-scale precipitation manipulation (+18%, -50%, or ambient) in a piñon-juniper woodland (Pinus edulis-Juniperus monosperma) to investigate how ...
